Katarina began to skate at age five. old. Her talent soon became apparent and she was accepted to Karl-Marx-Stadt's school for special needs. It was here that she got to know their coach Jutta Muller. Witt made her breakthrough year in 1982 after she finished second at the World Championships held in Copenhagen. Her graceful style and elegance of Witt drew the attention of everyone and she has dominating her sport since then. Olympic triumph at the Sarajevo Winter Games of 1984, Katarina Witz won the female bronze medal in figure skating following an extremely close contest. The victory she won four years earlier was a bit more tense. Her free skate was not a success, however her gold medal came from her performances at both mandatory figures (short program) and mandatory figures. Witt is the only female figure skater who has won the same competition twice, since Sonja Heine. Hall of Fame Witt, who was a star in film acting, then returned for figure skating, competed in the Lillehammer Winter Games 1994. Though she did not take home a medal, the young woman delighted her fans despite coming in seventh. Witt's induction into the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame was held in 1995.
